The complete guide
How a Pick’Em Pool works.
A pick’em pool is the classic weekly office game: everyone picks the winners each week, earns points for correct picks, and climbs a season-long standings. Here’s how an NFL pick’em works — straight-up vs. against the spread, scoring, strategy, and how to run one.
What is a pick’em pool?
Each week, every player picks the winner of each game on the slate. Correct picks earn points, points add up into weekly and season standings, and whoever is on top wins. It rewards football knowledge, runs all season, and is dead simple to play — which is why it’s the most popular office pool there is.
Straight-up vs. against the spread
The one big choice when you set up a pick’em is how picks are judged:
| Straight-up (SU) | Against the spread (ATS) | |
|---|---|---|
| You pick | The outright winner | The winner after the point spread |
| Best for | Casual groups, all skill levels | Sharper groups who follow the lines |
| Favorites | Easy — just take the better team | Must win by more than the spread |
| Balance | Big favorites are near-automatic | Underdogs cover often — more even |
Straight-up is the friendliest for a mixed group; against the spread keeps strong favorites from being automatic and rewards people who study the matchups.
Want more strategy? Add confidence
A standard pick’em gives one point per correct pick. A Confidence Pool lets players also rank how sure they are — assigning each pick a value from 1 to N — so the best calls are worth the most. Same picks, a lot more drama, and it’s a one-toggle upgrade when you set up your pool.
Scoring & standings
- One point per correct pick (or confidence points, if enabled).
- Weekly winners plus a cumulative season champion.
- A featured-game tiebreaker — predict the total points to break ties.
- Optional weekly prizes on top of the season prize.

Pick’em strategy
- In a straight-up pool, take favorites and only fade them with a real reason — chasing upsets every week rarely pays.
- Against the spread, home underdogs and divisional games are classic spots to find value.
- Check injuries, weather and the late line moves before you lock.
- In a season race, steady accuracy beats swinging for the fences in any single week.

FAQ
Pick’Em Pool, answered.
How does a Pick’Em pool work?+
Each week, every entry picks the winner of each game — straight-up, or against a spread you set. Correct picks earn points (one each, or by confidence), and points accumulate into weekly and season standings. The top of the standings wins.
What’s the Squares Bonus?+
A ChooseASquare original: pick a feature game each week and a 10×10 grid is tied to it. Every entry gets a square based on the game’s final score — hit yours and you earn bonus points or break a tie. It blends pick’em with the squares game everyone already loves.
Straight-up or against the spread?+
Your choice. Straight-up is the simplest (just pick the winner). Against-the-spread — a Pro Commissioner option — lets you enter a point spread per game so favorites have to cover.
What’s a Confidence Pool — is that the same thing?+
A Confidence Pool is a Pick’Em run in confidence mode: entries also rank how sure they are (1 up to the number of games, each value once), so correct high-confidence picks earn the most. Flip on confidence scoring when you set up a Pick’Em — see the Confidence Pool page for the details.
Can players have multiple entries?+
On Pro Commissioner, yes. The free plan is one entry per person.
Is it free, and how do payouts work?+
You can run a Pick’Em pool on the free plan and keep 100% of the pot. Set an entry fee and your cut; supporters pay you directly and the platform never holds the money.
Does it work for sports besides the NFL?+
Yes — build the weekly schedule from any league in your games library (college football, NBA, MLB, and more).
